Residents of Olomouc once again sorted more waste
Residents of Olomouc once again contributed to increasing the amount of sorted waste in the city last year. They disposed of 1402 tons of paper, 1435 tons of plastics, more than 2000 tons of glass, and 158 tons of metals into collection containers. Olomouc and the entire Olomouc Region have thus long held the top spots in the imaginary ranking of the amount of sorted waste.
The city saved nearly a million tons of CO2 through sorting
Olomouc, through its waste sorting support programs, which are also in response to the Climate Coalition's challenge, plans to recycle at least 65 percent of municipal waste collected in black containers by 2035.
According to the waste company EKO-KOM, Olomouc alone saved over 204 million MJ of energy through waste sorting, equivalent to more than 10 thousand tons of carbon dioxide. In the entire EKO-KOM system, 21.6 million GJ of energy and thus 922,540 tons of carbon dioxide were saved last year.
The Czech Republic is a leader in waste sorting, with 51.3 kg of sorted waste per capita annually, and more than 70 percent of Czechs sort their waste, for whom there are more than half a million color-coded containers for separated waste scattered throughout the country.
EKO-KOM operates a system based on the cooperation of cities, municipalities, and companies to ensure that waste is sorted and used as secondary raw materials or an energy source.
